Welcome to a new edition of Trends & News, the fifth one!

This week brings us the latest news from Meta in Artificial Intelligence, the farewell to a legendary Microsoft font, and, of course, we also talk about the premiere of Barbie (and everything behind this global phenomenon).

Hey Barbie, let’s go party!

Llama 2, Meta’s open-source AI

Meta releases Llama 2, its new open-source AI

As we discussed in the last edition of Nömad Trends & News, the race for artificial intelligence is more alive (and competitive) than ever. We previously mentioned that Meta was working on launching its own AI model to reduce OpenAI's dominance, and that moment has arrived.

Zuckerberg’s company and Microsoft have partnered to launch Llama 2, an open-source Artificial Intelligence model whose purpose is to facilitate research for developers and its commercial use. Furthermore, it is available for free.

You can download Llama 2 here.

Meta has introduced CM3leon, a generative AI tool for creating text from images and vice versa, which is characterized by offering high-quality results despite having been trained and developed with five times less computational power than other AI-based transformation methods.

Here is an example of how CM3leon edits the famous painting ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’ according to text instructions.

The marketing behind Barbie

Without a doubt, the premiere of the Barbie movie has become the cultural phenomenon of the year. Behind its success is an entire marketing strategy that goes beyond its actors wearing iconic Barbie and Ken outfits, or Airbnb offering a night at the doll’s house on the outskirts of Malibu.

On one hand, the mystery and the gradual reveal of its plot have fueled viewers' curiosity. On the other hand, the focus on showing the film's tone and aesthetic, without giving too many details about the plot, has encouraged viewers to buy tickets to resolve their doubts about whether the film is a parody, a comedy, or a mix of both.

For our part, and like many of you in recent days, we have been keeping a close eye on all the companies that have incorporated the Barbie aesthetic into their strategies. Our favorite is the marketing agency Jellyfish, which has used Midjourney AI to illustrate what the world's most iconic buildings would look like if they were located in Barbie's pink world.

Goodbye to the Calibri font

The legendary Microsoft Office font retires after 15 years. In its place, the company says hello to Aptos, the new default font in Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Excel.

Aptos is Microsoft’s new default font.

According to Microsoft, it will offer better display on current devices, more clarity, and uniformity. Created by American designer Steve Matteson, Aptos is presented as a sans-serif option and is inspired by mid-20th-century Swiss typography.
